Vague - A Giant Blur (Music Video)

In collaboration with Kulturo
Directed, edited, written by Riar Rizaldi
Cinematography by Adythia Utama
Produced and written by Marshal Pardede

Actor: Jean Marais

Accompanying essay by Dwiputri Pertiwi

Life is often demanding, but sometimes we demand even more from it. When it does not turn out the way we would like it to, it is difficult to avoid disappointment—it is as if we had just been diagnosed with a serious illness, that illness being life itself. It is a truth that becomes all the more difficult to accept when we realize that the disease is also the cure: the faster we run away, the faster we will return. So here we are, running back and forth, escaping, creating and re-creating the giant blur. At this point, the only way to get even the slightest sign of clarity is to go for a long drive when almost everyone else is asleep.

The world rushes its way in a circle.

Exploring themes of uncertainty, fading idealism and the fear of death is what the Jakarta-based trio, Vague, sought out to do through their first music video. "A Giant Blur", which is the fourth track from 'Footsteps' (2014), became the band's first attempt to combine their music with visual components. Vague collaborated with Kulturo, a collective initiated by filmmakers Riar Rizaldi and Adythia Utama.

Nothing is clear.

It's all a giant blur.

The video focuses on a middle-aged man who, upon receiving a letter from a hospital, spends the night driving aimlessly around Jakarta. As a whole, the narrative appears to be easy to follow, but the process of creating the video proved to be a challenge. "For me, Vague's 'A Giant Blur' is a song that's very hard to visualize as a story," said Riar. In the end, he and his team decided that it was best to treat the character as the video's unifying element—a bridge between the story and the song.

While a song is indeed capable of speaking for itself, "A Giant Blur" there is no harm in approaching it from a different perspective.

Footsteps is OUT NOW on CD through Sonic Funeral Records

This is the press release, written by Sonic Funeral Records :
At long last, the most anticipated debut full album from the Jakarta-based indie rock trio Vague has finally available on CD for the first time!

Vague, one of the hardest working bands to emerge from the underground has been known for their powerful performance through extensive tours and constant gigs around the city. Anyone fortunate enough to have lived through their live performances will attest to the band’s unparalleled standard of ferocity. Yet in their debut album Footsteps the band delivers nine songs full of disenchantment and unanswered questions about the value of life.

Many have compared them with post-hardcore juggernauts such as Fugazi, Dinosaur Jr or even Mineral, but Vague, despite taking all the influence from the aforementioned, have developed their own unique sounds to deliver emotions without being trapped in today’s whiny teenage drama. Their lyrics have developed into something far more contemplative to seek the true essence of existence.
CD features 8-panel thick digipak with 24-page lyric booklet in very limited quantities.

Live performance of "Footsteps" at Humming Mad #6 : Havoc, Cafe 79 Kemang.

We would like thank We.Hum.Collective and everyone involved in making the show happened. Despite all the technical problems that happened during our set, and later Vaz's set as well, we'd like to think that we left that night with more awareness on the importance of being prepared not only mentally, but technically as well. It's a good wake-up call before we leave for Jogja in less than a week.  We were a bit rusty after hadn't been playing a show for about 6 months. The show also marked our new bassist, Gary's first performance with us.

This is a video of us performing "Footsteps", one of our "newer" songs that will be on our next EP, hopefully out sometime next year. We have been performing this song for a while now. There was a problem with the mic not being loud enough compared to the instruments so we did this without one. Vocals are barely audible and I had to scream louder than the usual.

Thanks to The Spikeweed, A City Sorrow Built, Depriver and of course Vaz. And much love to all our friends who were there for us.
